The three first units of this class were built to a typical pre-war design with numerous portholes in the hull and superstructure.

Her hull portholes have been plated over. The escort carrier to the left is probably HMS Avenger (BAVG-2), which was delivered without an island.

Photographed in August 1972 while assigned as the permanent tow ship for USS White Sands (ARD-20), which carried the bathyscaph Trieste. The three vessels together were called the "Integral Operating Unit" (IOU) and were based at San Diego, Californina.

USCGC Cherokee (WATF-165)

After the war this ship had a long career in the Coast Guard. Note that the Coast Guard re-opened some of her hull portholes and improved visibility from the pilot house.
