USS St. Johns (ID # 3710), 1917-1919.
Previously the civilian steamship St. Johns (1878)

St. Johns, a 1098 gross ton coastal freight and passenger steamer, was built at Wilmington, Delaware, in 1878. Owned by C.H. St. Johns of Washington, D.C., she was chartered by the Navy in June 1917 for World War I service. Later assigned the registry ID # 3710, she operated as a fleet tender in the waters of the Fifth Naval District for her entire Naval career. USS St. Johns was decommissioned and returned to her owner in June 1919.

S.S. St. Johns (American Coastal Passenger Steamship, 1878)

Hauled out of the water, possibly when inspected by the Fifth Naval District on 26 June 1917.
Though initially evaluated as unsuitable for Naval use, this elderly side-wheel steamer was taken into service as USS St. Johns (ID # 3710). She was decommissioned returned to her owner on 10 June 1919.

Underway during World War I, while serving as a liberty party boat. This photograph was possibly taken from USS Iowa (Battleship # 4) in the Hampton Roads area, Virginia, in 1918.
Built in 1878, this side-wheel passenger steamer was chartered by the Navy in 1917 and returned to her owner on 10 June 1919.
