S.S. Shoshone (Freighter, 1911).
Originally German Passenger-Cargo Steamer Wasgenwald.
Served as USS Shoshone (ID # 1760) in 1919
Shoshone, a 4707 gross ton freighter, was built in 1911 at Vegesack, Germany as the Hamburg-America Line passenger-cargo steamship Wasgenwald. She was seized when the United States entered World War I in April 1917, renamed and spent most of the war under charter to the U.S. Army. A few months after the November 1918 Armistice the ship was taken over by the Navy and, in February 1919, placed in commission as USS Shoshone (ID # 1760). From then until July 1919 she was employed as a transport, making two round trip voyages between the U.S. East Coast and western France as part of the effort to bring American service personnel home from the former combat zone. USS Shoshone was decommissioned in early August 1919 and returned to her owner. In about 1922, while in commercial service, she was renamed Manoa.
